On Friday night, Germantown (1-0) traveled to Jackson North Side to begin the new season. The Red Devils got on the board midway through the 1st quarter when the defense forced a safety on the first play following a Marshall Ware punt that rolled out at the Indian 3 yard line. After a an exchange of punts, Jamal Frazier (9 carries for 71 yards, 1 TD) outran the entire Indian defense to the boundary and raced 25 yards for the Germantown touchdown. On the next Red Devil possession, Ethan Payne (17-31 for 261 yards; 2/1 and 1 running TD) hit Cam Baker (11 catches for 195 yards and 2 TDs) for a 12 yard strike and Germantown pushed its lead to 15-0 with 10 minutes left in the half. The duo would hook up once again before the half when Payne found Baker on a screen and Baker took it the rest of the way for a 65 yard touchdown, stretching the Germantown lead to 22-0.
North Side got on the board midway through the 3rd quarter when running back Haynes Holt took the handoff 72 yards for the only Indian points of the game (22-6). The Red Devils would respond early in the 4th quarter when B.J. Gardner (21 carries for 132 yards, 1 TD) raced into the end zone from 19 yards to make it 28-6, Germantown. Quarterback Ethan Payne would get Germantown in the end zone one more time, when he called his own number and finished the drive with a 4 yard TD run with 6:09 to play. The Red Devil defense however wasn’t done scoring, and recorded another safety with a blocked punt in the North Side end zone.
The Germantown defense only allowed a total of 149 yards on the night and was paced by K.J. Hatch (12 total tackles, 3 TFL, 1 FF, .5 Sack), Kendall Badgett (9 total tackles, 1 TFL), and Ashton Pachucki (5 total tackles, 1 Sack, 2 TFL, 1 Pressure). In total, the Red Devils had 19 TFL, 5 Sacks, 3 FF, 2 Fumble Recoveries, 2 Blocked Punts, and 2 Safeties.
Germantown will host crosstown rival Houston (1-0) next week at Ken Netherland Stadium. Houston picked up an impressive week one win over Brighton, 34-14. Kickoff is set for 7pm.
